Research & Development Manager (Samling Group of Company) – Miri
Job Requirement :
- Minimum Degree in Forestry Science or related
- At least 5 years of working experience in the same job scope in a reforestation activity
Responsibilities and Duties :
Tree Improvement
- Management and implementation of all technical fieldwork for Samling’s tree improvement programs for E. pellita, A. manguim, A. crassicarpa, F. moluccana, and G. Arborea, including
design and establishment of provenance/progeny trials to develop base populations for ongoing
breeding for the tree breeding programs. - Management of field trial assessment programs and then management and basic analyses of all
data obtained from these trials. - Formulation of deployment recommendations to management for optimizing genetic potential of
seeds and clonal stocks for propagation in production nurseries.
Silviculture
- Formulation of recommendations to optimize silvicultural regimes as new results are obtained
from silviculture research trials.
Nursery Management
- Day to day management of Samling’s Segan forest tree production nursery and overall
supervision and coordination of Samling’s other tree plantation nurseries. - Coordination of all seedling/rooted-cutting production for the company’s annual tree plantation
establishment program. - Planning and coordinating the logistics of seedling/cutting deliveries from the company’s central
nursery to the LPFs (Licensed Planted Forest). - Compiling schedules for seed sowing and setting of cuttings, and securing optimal seed supplies.
- Maintenance of nursery management systems in order to comply with the Malaysian Timber Certification Scheme (MTCS) – a certification system endorsed by PEFC.
Seed Orchards & Seed Centre
- Overseeing the management and expansion of an A. mangium clonal seed orchard.
- Development of cutting mother plants (hedge plants) for use in the production of A. mangium
rooted-cuttings to support family forestry.
Research Manager
- Development of an elite seedling seed orchard and various seed production areas (SPAs) from seed source trials to fast track production of improved seed for E pellita, A. crassicarpa, A. mangium, and other species.
- Sourcing improved seed supplies to supplement the company’s own limited seed supply and then issuing seeds to company nurseries.
- Development and maintenance of Samling’s company seed register.
Pest and Disease (Tree Pathology)
- Diagnostic pathology laboratory to support the plantation and management staff in identifying
pests and diseases in the existing plantations. - Development of an integrated pest and disease monitoring program, including instructional materials and training for plantation management staff in identifying the potential pest and disease risks within the plantations.
Enumeration
- Manage the company’s enumeration crews in the different LPFs.
- Verify and analyze tree measurement data collected from PSPs and TSPs. Assist in developing a species specific tree growth model for Samling.
- Coordinate the development of a volume and taper function for E pellita, G. Arborea and F. moluccana.
